Psychologists are driving efforts to get effective, research-based bullying-prevention and intervention programs into schools. This document is comprised of seven sections: Defining the Problem, Promising Practices, Review of NCPC Projects, Recommendations, Highlighted NCPC-Sponsored Projects, Anti-Bullying Resources, and Appendices. Chapter 5 offers specific strategies that students and young people can use to address bullying.
Research published in the International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health states that victims are at a higher risk for mental health problems as long as five years after the fact, and the Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment & Health found that victims of workplace bullying were at a higher risk for suicide.
For some students cyberbullying may provide a venue for bullying that they would never say or do in person. The Bullying Prevention Unit was designed to be used with the Second Step program because we know that an effective way of tackling the problem of bullying is by focusing on children's social-emotional skills.
Therefore, schools and public health officials are looking to understand why children bully and are seeking to develop effective strategies to reduce or eliminate risk factors (CDC, 2011a, 2011b). Only a small percentage of projects (6%) indicated they went beyond involvement of youth in program delivery to allow for bullying control or decision-making throughout all phases of the intervention.
